Huna is a philosophy developed in ancient Polynesia, but it is equally applicable in Chicago 2008, or any other place at any other time. From the philosophy grows a healing system with a unique take on the interchange between mind and body. If you have mental, emotional or physical issues that you can't explain, or just don't know what to do about, huna may be a very valuable perspective for you to consider. The kahunas of polynesia described their view of the world in seven principles. Each principle can be stated simply, yet has incredible depth. The translations from the Hawaiian words are those of my huna teacher, Serge Kahili King . For each I have added a positive action associated with each. Ike: The World Is What You Think It Is. Positive Action: We all live in the same world, but each one of us interprets it differently. If you are stuck in unhelpful patterns of thought and behavior, try looking at your current perspective as one of many possibilites. There may be ways of looking at things you had not considered. Kala: There Are No Limits Positive Action: Reimagine your limits. We need to define limits to make sense of our world, but past ideas may or may not serve us today. Examine your thinking and see where you may be limiting yourself unnecessarily. Makia: Energy Flows Where Attention Goes Positive Action: Focus on what you want, not on what you don't want. Positive change doesn't come from considering everything that might go wrong and avoiding all of it, it happens from concentrated energy toward new ideas. You can still prepare for the future, just don't make yourself sick playing every potential disaster scenario in your mind. Manawa: Now Is the Moment of Power Positive Action: Connect with the present moment. Be aware of what you can see, hear and feel. This alone will help you feel more centered and energized. Aloha: To Love Is to be Happy With Positive Action: We've heard so many times that love hurts, you might actually think that it's true. Fear hurts. Anger hurts. Supressed emotions hurt. Love is the most wonderful thing in the universe, and it exists in every situation and every relationship. Love, in any form, is always welcome and appreciated. Be generous with your love- you have an infinite supply. Mana: All Power Comes from Within Positive Action: Your state of wellness is in your hands. Healthy habits, drugs, and yes, holistic healers can facilitate healing. The true healer is the healee. If you're not sure where to start, try taking any positive action that you can , while reducing anger and fear. Pono: Effectiveness Is the Measure of Truth Positive Action: When resolving an issue, results are what matter (taking into account side effects and depth of healing of course). Do more of what works and less of what doesn't. |
